The release of a highly anticipated trailer is not new. However the folks behind the new Planet of the Apes prequel (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) took it upon themselves to create a small event 1 day before the trailer release.

Indeed to take advantage of the real-time nature of the web which resonates increasingly with events, they streamed a show direct from New Zealand to their Facebook page, giving fans all around the world their first glimpse of the movie as well as insight from the Visual FX director and an actor.

All and all a smart play to leverage real-time conversation and build up anticipation of the trailer. The results, a 50% increase in their Facebook Fan page like count.

Color Me Fascinated: A Photo Social Network for the Here and Now

Late last week a new startup named Color created quit a buzz with its entry in the mobile photo apps category. Backed by Sequoia Ventures (the same guys who funded YouTube among many others), they unveiled aphoto app for iOS and Android devices with an interesting twist. Instead of letting you pick who you shared your photos with, it automatically created a set of friends based on physical proximity to you.

Show up at a industry party and start taking pictures. If you're doing that through Color those photos are instantly shared with everyone else at that event with the Color app open.

Color is based on the notion of an implied social circle, in this case a set of strangers who are at the same event (location).

All in all this startup is shaking up things. Look to see more apps with implied social networks coming out soon.
